I am going to share with you my favourite way to build my business quickly. Before I used to market mainly with search engines, but with the change in search engine algorithms this is becoming more difficult and can be frustrating. It can take up to a year to get good rankings. I use a popular social networking site Ecademy. You can build good contacts for your business there. You can also place marketplace listings optimized for your keywords and get good search engine rankings within a number of days. The other favourite method that I like to use to make money online is to write articles and submit them to the top article directories. Usually I get traffic within days of submitting and in the longer term when search engines index these articles I also get traffic from the search engines. Once you have chosen the method to make money online you need to focus on it for at least six months. Any business takes patience and focus. The longer you are in business the more stable it will become.

Whichever you choose, you have to have one major topic and one target audience.

For instance, I can have a niche as a holistic health resource and find all sorts of affiliates to feature. I can have a niche as a marketing expert (I do) or a copy writer (I'm working on it) but each niche will draw a select audience and you want to be certain you focus your content and affiliate resources to their specific needs.

Have your own affiliate program

If you have active services and a number of products, it's great to have your own affiliate program. However, like anything else in busyness, you need to support your affiliates with html banners and text links and suggested email copy and special promotions. You have to cultivate your relationship with your own affiliates just as you cultivate your prospects.

The resource page on my web site is filled with affiliate links. Sure I recommend things that don't have an affiliate program, because I am in service to my web site visitors and want to give them as much value as I can. But when I can, it's an affiliate link.

Follow your passion

I still think the desire to do something simply to earn money is a poor choice. People won't buy just because you want to sell. They buy because they want it even more than they need it. They buy when you can get them caught up in your passion and excitement about the product or service they might purchase. Emotion sells. Bum marketing is so called because even a bum can make money using this method. You need no outlay and can start with nothing. Absolutely zilch!

I had absolutely zilch because I had maxed out 7 credit cards. I used to laugh when I read about others doing that with just two, but I did it myself in spades! My only word to you would be very careful how you use PPC programs like Adwords because I wasnt. But thats another story.

I discovered bum marketing because if there is one thing I am good at, it is writing. Bum marketing involves finding a profitable niche, or one that could be profitable. It has to be something with a reasonable large following, and a reasonable number of topics attached to it. Like fly fishing or quilting, or something similar. Something that is followed by people you would expect to have money. You dont want people flinching at paying $97 for a product related to their hobby or interest.

You then have to find some decent keywords. For bum marketing it doesnt matter too much if there is competition for them, but not too general. Not quilting but perhaps hand quilting machines or deep throat quilters. Then get a website set up. You can get a cheap functional site for under $5 a month and then set up a website. A sales page for a product and a few pages with some content. If you can get it, register a domain name that is the same as, or relates to, one of the keywords you have chosen.

Write a few articles on the topic of your website, and use one for each of the web pages. Bum marketing is all about article writing. You should have one web page for each keyword you are using relating to your website. Find a few products to sell. If you have your own then great, but if not sell affiliate products.

Then write a few more articles and submit them to article directories. Each directory will allow you what is known as an Authors Resource Box in which you can say a little about yourself and provide a URL for people to click on for more information. The URL should lead to a page that relates to the topic of the article, and should ideally be a text link with the keyword or phrase that is the title of your web page. The text link should be hyperlinked to the page; what is termed an active link.

If the directory does not specifically provide a Resource Box, you can add that information after your article. It has to be included and will go with your article whenever it is copied and used. The article will not only bring you traffic, but also valuable links back to your web pages.

It is important that you continue to write and keep pumping out new articles. I like to write two every week and send them off to the top 25 directories. Thats all I have to do because most of the top 25 provide material to other directories, and before you know it your articles are all over the internet. Thats bum marketing.

As I said, even a bum with no money can do it. I know, because I was that bum at one time. I am no longer!

When is advice free and when should you charge for it?

A question is often asked as to when to charge for information. This is not an easy question to answer as it really depends on the situation. If you are doing a speech for non-profit, then your advice can be pro bono (at no cost). I would have no difficulty sharing my expertise with such an organization but I do draw the line when a profit organization asks for the same privileges. Non-profits are exactly what their name say, and even though they do have money to spend in some areas, some free advice is good. The advice, however, should be given through formal channels. You should ask to work with their board of directors to see what help they actually need and then offer your services.

Remember that each person in a non-profit also has a job in the community and may want to use your services or book you for an event as a speaker. The rule of thumb is to make sure you do not give the farm away when giving free advice. If you do, there is nothing more you can give to the business people in that organization. You should temper what you give so that the organization can move forward but watch out for those organizations that tend to ask more than you can give. It is the additional information that you can charge for.

There will always be a fine line between giving free information and being exploited. If you are exploited, you will know it and the experience will give you a bad taste for non-profit organizations. Not all organizations are run that way, give freely of your advice and make sure they use the information for what it is intended.
