Amazingly Simple Ways to Make Money
Each time I look in the garage or the basement and see all the junk that we have accumulated over the last 15 years in this house all I see is junk! The old saying "One man's junk is another man's treasure," or words similar to that effect also ring in my ears.
My husband used to work with a gentleman who makes his living off other people's junk. Literally. He visits auction sales, farm sales, garage sales and searches out items that others would be just throwing away. He has developed a keen eye for what has value among all that scrap. Our town has an auction sale every Good Friday. Townspeople clean out their garages, basements, spare rooms etc. and donate their "junk" each year. All the proceeds go to a good cause and this sale draws people every year for bargains and treasures.
Not only is our friend there bidding, but he is there until the bitter end and people are loading up and heading home. Now, not everything gets sold and instead of taking the left overs to the dump, he has his pick and always goes home with some items that he knows will make him money. So what does he look for? Metal - old barbeques (aluminum), wiring (has copper inside!), old cars (for parts), metal scrap - in other words anything that can be recycled for cash. He has developed a "niche" for himself and at the same time in his own way is helping the environment. He loves what he does. He travels to sales, talks to the folks there and gets to know them, buys junk, sorts and sells it and makes money! Another hard day at the "office." So the gentleman doesn't see junk, he sees dollar signs!
We have another friend who has a full time embroidery business. Believe me, he is busy all year round and has a full time staff who man his banks of embroidery machines. He also has a small farm where he grows market produce. Not that he needs the money, it started out as a hobby. But now he has also developed a niche for himself with his feature produce - heritage tomatoes and vegetables. You may remember the kind that have size, flavour and lots of juice - not the kind you see in grocery stores today. He sets up a table at the farmers' market in the small "tourist" town next to where he lives from July to October. One day a week and he rakes in incredible amounts of money with his produce. One day a week. Which business do you think our friend derives more pleasure from?
