Word-of-mouth is one of the oldest way yet still effective way of advertising. Using word-of-mouth to advertise is not easy if you don't know very many people, if this is your case then maybe you should start with paid advertising first. That way word-of-mouth can generate on its own when people start talking about whatever you are advertising whether it be your web site or landscaping business etc... On the other hand if you are outspoken kind of person with lots of friends and relatives then this is a good way of getting free advertising by word of mouth. Now I can say that I have never tried that and I kind of doubt that that will bring you many customers.
